Nakamachi Street with Storehouses

This picturesque streetscape once flourished as the castle town of the national treasure, Matsumoto Castle. It features many storehouses from the Edo to Taisho periods, characterized by their traditional namako walls, an authentic plastering style that hails from Japan. This street brims with historic ambiance, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.

The area is home to numerous shops selling tasteful folk crafts and traditional Japanese items, making it an excellent place to hunt for unique souvenirs from Matsumoto. There are also plenty of cafes, sweet shops, and restaurants, ensuring you won't run out of options for dining or taking a break. Every Sunday from April to December, a morning market is held where local farmers sell seasonal vegetables and wild plants. Known as "the shortest morning market in Japan" because many vendors sell out within 10 minutes, it's best to arrive by the 9:30am start time.

Other attractions include the multi-purpose "Kurassic-kan" space, which hosts various events, and the "Matsumoto Scale Museum," a former weighing shop now turned into a museum.
