Nestled in at the base of Mount Hakodate, Motomachi Park offers unforgettable, sprawling views out over Hakodate Port. The park was first established 1982 as home to a number of cultural heritage buildings, including the former Hokkaido Government Hakodate Branch Office, the old Hakodate Magistrate's Office Book Depository and nationally designated Important Cultural Property, the former Hakodate Ward Public Hall. Today the park remains steeped in history, as it is said that the name "Hakodate" originated from the box-shaped mansion built nearby by the Tsugaru clan lord, Masamichi Kawano.

Keep a note to visit after hours for evening illuminations at the park buildings and a romantic, twinkling air. The entire historic district around the park also comes aglow with illuminations, making for a magical view of the cityscape to catch from the park’s slopes.

The park is a pleasant green space and perfect spot to drop off for a relaxing break between sightseeing. Bonus tip, join the many locals and travelers in the know who swing by in early summer or fall for the gorgeous reads and golds of fall foliage.
