Shirahige Falls

A 30-meter waterfall cascading into a cobalt blue river, with a different look and glimmer each season.

Last update :

One of the iconic attractions of the Biei Shirogane Onsen area, Shirahige Falls lives up to its name as white streams cascade down a rugged cliff like a "white beard”, dropping approximately 30 meters into the Biei River. This waterfall is classified as a rare "subterranean stream waterfall" (senryu-baku), where water flows directly from cracks in the rock face.

The volcanic minerals carried by the water from Mount Tokachi affect light reflection, creating the mesmerizing cobalt blue hue of the Biei River. Many known and love this spot for jaw-dropping view of white waterfall splashing into the vivid blue river below. The scenery changes with the seasons—lush greenery in summer, fiery hues in autumn, and a striking contrast of snowy white against black rocks in winter, making it particularly spectacular.

The Shirogane Bridge (also known as Blue River Bridge) offers the best viewpoint to take in the full splendor of the falls. At night, the area is illuminated, transforming the falls into a magical, otherworldly scene. Located just a 5-minute drive away is another popular Biei attraction, the Shirogane Blue Pond, which makes for an excellent combined visit.
