Nemunoki-no-niwa Garden
A tranquil park nestled in a residential neighborhood, offering a peaceful retreat.
Nestled in a quiet residential area near the bustling office district of Shinagawa, Nemunoki-no-niwa Garden is a serene public park with imperial ties. It was established in 2004 on the former grounds of the Shoda Residence, the childhood home of Empress Emerita Michiko. The park’s name comes from “Nemunoki no Komoriuta” (Lullaby of the Silk Tree), a song she wrote during her high school years.
The silk tree (Nemunoki), which gives the park its name, serves as its symbolic tree, blooming with delicate flowers each mid-June. Visitors can also admire around 50 species of trees and plants throughout the park. A highlight is the Princess Michiko rose, a vibrant orange flower gifted from the UK when she was Crown Princess. It blooms beautifully in spring and autumn, delighting visitors with its elegance.
The park is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, with free admission, making it an easily accessible retreat. Closed only during New Year's holidays, this small yet peaceful park is the perfect spot to take a break from the city's hustle and recharge in a tranquil setting.
