Ishigakiyama Ichiya Castle
The remains of a fortification used as Toyotomi Hideyoshi's headquarters during the Siege of Odawara. Offers a panoramic view of the castle town and Sagami Bay.
Ishigakiyama Ichiya Castle was built in 1590 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Siege of Odawara. The name "Overnight Castle" comes from a legendary story: Hideyoshi constructed a skeletal frame of the castle covered with white paper within a forest. He then ordered the surrounding trees to be cleared, making the castle suddenly visible, causing shock and a drop in morale among the opposing forces at Odawara Castle.
In reality, the construction involved a workforce of approximately 40,000 people and took about 80 days to complete. Hideyoshi hosted tea ceremonies with Yodo-dono and Sen no Rikyū here and even received envoys from the Emperor.
Today, the stone walls made from stacked natural rocks remain intact. The entire area, including Ishigakiyama Ichiya Castle, is designated as a National Historic Site and part of a national park. In 2017, it was selected as one of the "Continued Top 100 Castles of Japan." Located at an altitude of about 262 meters, the site offers panoramic views of Odawara Castle and Sagami Bay on clear days. It’s a popular hiking spot where visitors can enjoy both history and nature.
At the base of Ishigakiyama, next to the Overnight Castle Parking Lot, you’ll find Ichiya Castle Yoroizuka Farm, offering sweets and pastries made with locally sourced fruits and vegetables. The terrace seating area provides a great place to enjoy a treat, so be sure to stop by.
