Lake Abashiri

Set in the southwest corner of the city with the same name is Lake Abashiri, a marine lake stretching 43 all around with a full index of activities to try all year around.

A 7 km walking path skirts the lake with spots for birdwatching and leisurely strolls to try on your next visit. The most famous activity is ice fishing for smelt in winter. With rental equipment including rods, tackle, and bait, visitors can easily try ice fishing on the frozen lake. Freshly caught smelt can be enjoyed as tempura on the spot, with cooking equipment like pots, oil, and tempura batter available for rent.
