Hagi Reverberatory Furnace
A historical structure recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing a story of innovation.
The Hagi Reverberatory Furnace, located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is the remains of a Western-style furnace built to melt metal. Constructed in 1856 by the Hagi Domain to produce iron cannons in response to foreign threats, only the approximately 10-meter-high brick chimney remains today.
The furnace employed cutting-edge technology of the time, using heat reflected from the ceiling of the combustion chamber to melt iron. Of the reverberatory furnaces in Japan, only three remain: the Nirayama Furnace in Shizuoka, the Shūseikan Furnace in Kagoshima, and the Hagi Furnace. In 2015, it was registered as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.
Historical documents reveal that this furnace was a prototype and never reached operational status. Nevertheless, it remains a valuable testament to the Hagi Domain’s efforts to embrace advanced technology and drive industrialization.
