Built in 1935 on the site of the Hagi Domain’s educational institution, Meirinkan is one of Japan’s largest wood-made school buildings, and heralded launchpad for many Meiji Restoration era leaders. The main building is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan and retains the historic atmosphere of education from that time.

Step into the main building to find a number of detailed rooms and a tourist information center that send you on a deep dive into the history and culture of Yamaguchi Prefecture and the Hagi area. Unique displays include reconstructed classrooms, the principal's office, and even the attic space, revealing the building’s original structure.
The second building is home to the World Heritage Visitor Center and the Bakumatsu Museum. Here, visitors can learn in detail about the Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution and the history of the late Edo and Meiji Restoration periods. It highlights the achievements of the Choshu Five, including Kaoru Inoue and Hirobumi Ito, who played key roles in the Meiji Restoration.
The third building features a civic gallery, fostering cultural activities for the community. Meanwhile, the fourth building is equipped with coworking spaces, ideal for workations, telework, or as a workspace for business travelers.

After exploring, kick back and relax at Cafe Restaurant Hagi Koyomi back at the main restaurant. Enjoy dishes like the Hagi Gozen or Fried Tilefish Set, made with local ingredients, while soaking in the warmth of the wooden schoolhouse.
