Unpenji Ropeway

Unpenji Ropeway is one of the largest of its kind across Japan, suspended along Unpenji Mountain found in Kan’onji City, Kagawa Prefecture. The entire length stretches a whopping 2,600 meters over 660-meters of elevation, offering riders a 36 km/h or 7-minute sojourn up to the mountaintop station for jaw-dropping views.

Once at the top you’ll find yourself at Mount Unpenji Summit Park, a prime spot to lookout over a full panorama of the Seto Inland Sea and Kan’onji City. The park is the perfect point to release your inner shutterbug thanks to grammable photo spots like the "Sky Swing”, a sought-after perch that feels like swinging across the open sky, the "Sky Photo Frame" for a memorable snap, plus benches designed with musical notes and heart motifs. As an added perk, there’s even a trendy food truck in the park where you can grab a hand-drip coffee or all-original drink.

The ropeway doubles as an easy ride for the culture buffs making their way to Unpenji, the 66th temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Drop by here to find its main deity, a seated statue of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon) from the Heian period, designated as an Important Cultural Property, as well as 500 Rakan statues scattered across the grounds. Coupled with the park, this coveted destination promises scenic backdrops all year around thanks to the lush greens of early summer, hydrangeas, vibrant autumn foliage, and even snow in winter.
