Oronko Rock
A symbol of Shiretoko offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views from its summit.
Located near Utoro Port, this towering 60-meter-high rock is a symbol of Shiretoko. The name "Oronko Rock" comes from the Ainu word meaning "the rock that sits there" and is believed to be derived from the Oronko tribe, an indigenous group said to have lived there. Having stood in this area since ancient times, it has become an iconic presence in Shiretoko.
A steep staircase of about 170 steps leads to the summit, which features a flat surface. From the top, you can take in breathtaking 360-degree views, including the crystal-clear blue waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, the rugged peaks of the Shiretoko Mountain Range, and the townscape of Utoro. This panoramic view is so stunning that it is counted among the Shiretoko Hakkei (Eight Views of Shiretoko).
In summer, the summit is blanketed with charming flowers, while winter offers the majestic sight of endless drift ice stretching across the horizon. The rock's ever-changing beauty through the seasons is one of its greatest attractions. Conveniently located near the boarding area for Shiretoko sightseeing boats, it’s an excellent spot to explore before or after your cruise.
