Nasu Onsen Village

Discovered around 1,400 years ago, the Nasu Onsen area is one of the most historic hot spring clusters in Tochigi Prefecture, with Nasu Yumoto Onsen being its most renowned. Located on the slopes of Mt. Chausu in the northwestern part of Nasu Town, the area is home to eight distinct hot springs, each offering different water qualities and health benefits, making it an ideal destination for hot spring hopping. Records show that historical figures such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Nichiren once bathed here, highlighting its longstanding reputation as a famous hot spring area.

Book a time away from any of the many stay options, including traditional ryokan with a sense of prestige, modern hotels, and affordable lodges for budget travelers. There’s even more eclectic options like the chance to stay in a Mongolian yurt known as a "ger”. Nasu Yumoto Onsen also offers a variety of day-use hot spring facilities, including th4e iconic "Shika no Yu”, just waiting for a drop-in.

After your soak there’s plenty of sightseeing, including the Sesshoseki ("Killing Stone"), a National Scenic Spot immortalized by the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho in The Narrow Road to the Deep North. There’s also the Yawata Azalea Colony, which blooms with 200,000 flowers in the spring, and Nasu Onsen Shrine, where visitors can enjoy a free foot bath in front of the temple.
