Tori-ike (Okinawa)

Two mysterious, connected ponds—an awe-inspiring destination for divers.

Last update :

Located on Shimoji Island, a remote island off Miyako Island in Okinawa, Tori-ike (Tori Pond) is a mystical pair of sinkholes designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan. From above, they resemble a pair of dragon’s eyes, adding to their enchanting allure. What makes these ponds truly fascinating is that they're connected by an underground tunnel—and even more remarkably, they also connect to the ocean.

The ocean-facing pond spans 75 meters in diameter and reaches a depth of 45 meters, while the landward pond is slightly smaller at 55 meters wide and 25 meters deep. Divers enter through a sea cave, swimming into the ponds to witness a rare natural phenomenon called a "thermocline," where layers of seawater and freshwater mix. The resulting gradient—from the deep cobalt blue of the ocean to the shimmering emerald of the ponds—is simply breathtaking.

From the surface, visitors can enjoy ever-changing hues caused by shifting tides. Tori-ike is also known as a spiritual power spot, believed to bring good luck in love and harmony in relationships—making it a favorite for couples and spiritual seekers alike.
