Kei-chan, a famous local dish representing Gifu, has been enjoyed since the 1950s in areas such as Gero City in the southern Hida region and Gujo City in the Okumino region. Maruhachi Shokudo, known as the birthplace of Kei-chan, is located about a 20-minute drive from the city center, where Gero Onsen is situated, making it a great spot to visit during your sightseeing.

Kei-chan is a dish where chicken is marinated in a soy sauce or miso-based sauce with garlic and ginger, then grilled. At Maruhachi Shokudo, you get to grill it yourself on a small tabletop griddle. The ingredients are kept simple, with just chicken and cabbage, but don’t be fooled by its simplicity—when served, the generous portion will surprise you. However, thanks to the incredible flavor of the garlic-infused soy sauce marinade, you'll finish it in no time. Its bold seasoning pairs perfectly with rice, and it goes exceptionally well with a cold beer.

Now run by the third generation, this extremely popular restaurant attracts many regulars and tourists daily. Not only on weekends but even on weekdays, be prepared for long lines.
