Shorinzan Darumaji Temple

Paint a daruam at this birthplace of the lucky Daruma doll.

Last update :

This Zen (Obaku) Buddhist temple sits near the Usui River in full renown as the birthplace of the lucky Daruma doll. The site belongs to a sect that inherits the teachings of Daruma-Daishi (Bodhidharma), the founder of Chinese Zen Buddhism.

The lucky Daruma doll is characterized by features inspired by auspicious symbols: eyebrows resembling cranes facing each other, a mustache shaped like turtles facing each other, inscriptions for wishes on both sides of the face, and the word "Fuku-iri" ("filled with luck") written on its belly. These dolls are often used for various prayers and good luck charms. The temple’s annual Daruma Market, held every January 6–7, attracts visitors from far and wide. Make your way here for an extra-special Daruma painting experience and the chance to create a unique Daruma that hums with your personal style and wishes.

Step onto the temple grounds to find plenty of fascinating points of interest like the Daruma Hall, complete with a full array of Daruma dolls from different eras and cultures, and Senshin-tei, a traditional residence once inhabited by world-renowned German architect Bruno Taut. Taut used Senshin-tei as a base for studying Japanese culture and played a significant role in introducing it to the world. His memorial stone, located at the site, is designated as a historical landmark in Gunma Prefecture.

Shorinzan Darumaji is also famous for its vibrant fall folliage. If your travels are booked for fall, keep an eye out for the striking scene of iconic red Daruma dolls enrobed in the hues of autumn leaves.
