Shimane Art Museum
A museum blessed with unbeatable views over Lake Shinji that shifts in look with each passing hour.
A lakeside museum themed around harmony with water, located along the shores of Lake Shinji. Designed with a low profile to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, its gentle, wave-like curves evoke the image of a "nagisa," the connecting point between water and land.
Step inside the museum to find a stunning repertoire and collection of paintings, crafts, photography, and sculptures. It houses over 3,000 Japanese prints, including ukiyo-e, making it one of the largest collections in the country. Themed around "water”, the collection features works by artists like Courbet, Monet, and Hokusai. The museum also keeps exhibits to highlight traditional crafts including ceramics and lacquerware, as well as works by artists connected to Shimane. Both themed collection exhibitions and special exhibitions are regularly held.
At the museum lobby and viewing terrace you’ll find a lakefront park—home to sculptures like the popular "Shinji Lake Rabbit"—offer breathtaking views of Lake Shinji and Matsue City. From March to September, the museum remains open until 30 minutes after sunset, allowing visitors to savor the lake's stunning evening views, designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Sunsets.
