Shinojima

Located off the coast of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, Shinojima is a picturesque remote island accessible in just about an hour and a half from Nagoya. While a day trip is possible, staying overnight at one of its many ryokan or hotels is highly recommended to fully enjoy its charm.

A visit to Shinojima wouldn’t be complete without indulging in its fresh seafood. The tiger pufferfish caught in the winter waters rivals those from Yamaguchi Prefecture in quality and taste. Other local specialties include sweet and delicate sea bream, shirasu (whitebait) with Japan’s highest catch volume, octopus with a firm texture, fluffy conger eel, and rich, flavorful oysters, offering a variety of seasonal delicacies year-round.

For those who love the sea, Shinojima offers plenty of activities. Fishing enthusiasts can visit Shinojima Fishing Heaven, where they can easily catch sea bream, yellowtail, and horse mackerel. More serious anglers can try offshore fishing for large flounder and sea bream. In summer, the island’s beautiful natural white sand beaches are perfect for swimming and relaxation.

Shinojima is also rich in history, making it a great place for a leisurely stroll. At sunset, head to Kahi Park on the island’s western side to witness a breathtaking view that has earned a spot on the list of Japan’s Top 100 Sunsets.

The island also shares a deep connection with Ise Jingu Shrine. Shimmei Shrine and Hachioji Shrine are rebuilt using sacred timber from Ise Jingu during its Shikinen Sengu ritual. Every year on October 12, the island hosts the Onbe Tai Offering Festival, where freshly caught sea bream is salted and presented as an offering, filling the island with vibrant energy and tradition.
