Kushiro Marsh Observatory
Stunning panoramic views and nearby trails to explore at this viewpoint over Japan’s largest wetland.
Kushiro Marsh, Japan’s largest wetland, spans an impressive 26,000 hectares with the meandering Kushiro River running through it. This natural treasure trove is home to around 2,000 species of flora and fauna, including the nationally protected red-crowned crane (tancho). For first-time visitors, the Kushiro Marsh Observatory, located on a hill on the western side of the marsh, is a must-visit spot.
The three-story building offers paid exhibits starting on the second floor. The third-floor observation deck and rooftop provide panoramic views of the marshlands, the Akan Mountains, and the city of Kushiro. The second floor features dioramas, models of wildlife, and video displays that offer insights into the marsh's ecosystem. The first floor is free to access and includes a shop and restaurant.
Surrounding the observatory is a 2.5-kilometer walking trail, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in untouched nature. Along the trail, the satellite observation deck offers breathtaking views of the seemingly endless marshlands, a scene so stunning it feels like stepping outside of Japan. For wheelchair users, the universal-design right-loop route provides accessible access to the satellite observation deck.
