Cape Noshappu
Striking sunsets at the northernmost tip of Japan!
Located at the northwesternmost point of Wakkanai City, Cape Noshappu juts out into the Soya Strait, offering breathtaking views of the sea. The name is derived from the Ainu words Not-Shamu, meaning “a cape protruding like a jaw” or “a place where waves break.”
Gaze out west to find panoramic views of Mount Rishiri, often called the "floating flower island," and Rebun Island. On clear days, the silhouette of Sakhalin Island can be seen to the north. The cape is famous for its spectacular sunsets, where the sun sets over the horizon, painting the sea in shades of orange. The silhouette of Rishiri Island against the glowing sky creates an unforgettable scene.
Nearby attractions include Wakkanai Lighthouse, Japan's second tallest lighthouse at 42.7 meters, the Youth Science Museum, which features exhibits on Antarctic exploration and a planetarium, and the Noshappu Cold Water Aquarium, Japan’s northernmost aquarium. During early mornings in July and August, visitors can also witness the traditional summer harvest of Rishiri kelp.
