Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley)

A scenic spot where white steam rises and boiling water gushes out, creating a landscape that reminds you of hell.

3.95 1

One of Noboribetsu’s most popular tourist destinations, Jigokudani is the remains of a volcanic crater formed by the eruption of Mount Hiyoriyama. The valley, which spans about 450 meters in diameter and covers approximately 11 hectares, is still geothermally active. It serves as the main source for the renowned Noboribetsu Onsen, which boasts an impressive daily output of 10,000 tons of hot spring water.

The bare rock faces are dotted with numerous hot spring vents and steam spouts, emitting thick white smoke that gives the area its hellish appearance. A walking trail that takes about 20 minutes to complete has been developed around the valley, allowing visitors to closely observe the steaming vents and flowing hot spring water. For those with extra time, a roughly two-hour course is recommended that starts at the Noboribetsu Park Service Center—where you can find sightseeing information and souvenirs—and takes you through Jigokudani to the natural footbath at Oyunumagawa.

In summer, the fresh greenery contrasts beautifully with the rugged terrain. In autumn, the surrounding trees, such as rowan and birch, turn brilliant shades of red and gold, offering a striking contrast to the valley’s stark landscape. In winter, the scene becomes even more breathtaking as the rocky slopes are blanketed in snow. At night, the walking paths are illuminated, creating an enchanting and almost otherworldly atmosphere.
