Karafuto Islanders Memorial – Gate of Ice and Snow
A symbolic monument of Wakkanai Park—take a moment to reflect on history.
Located within Wakkanai Park, the Karafuto Islanders Memorial – Gate of Ice and Snow is a monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in Karafuto (now Sakhalin), which was once part of Japan. The memorial stands on ground that historically served as a vital link between Japan and Karafuto—a place where many people once came and went.
The monument was created by world-renowned sculptor Shin Hongo, a native of Sapporo, and consists of three elements: the Gate of Longing, a statue of a woman, and a sacred stone. The female figure symbolizes the strength and resilience of those who survived through harsh winters and rose again from the despair of post-war defeat. On clear days, the silhouette of Sakhalin can faintly be seen beyond the gate—an emotional reminder of the homeland left behind.
Other memorials are scattered throughout the park, including the nearby Monument to the Nine Maidens. Visiting them together offers a deeper understanding of the area's history. Since its erection in August 1963, Wakkanai City has held an annual memorial service every August—the Gate of Ice and Snow & Nine Maidens Peace Memorial Ceremony—to honor those connected to Karafuto.
Wakkanai Park was also registered as a “Japan Night View Heritage” site in 2018. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic night views of the city. The Gate of Ice and Snow is beautifully illuminated after dark, offering a different, more ethereal atmosphere than during the day.
