Chomonkyo Gorge
One of Yamaguchi Prefecture’s most scenic spots, known for its breathtaking gorge views.
Stretching approximately 12 kilometers from Hagi to Yamaguchi City, Chomonkyo Gorge is one of Yamaguchi Prefecture’s most scenic natural spots. It was once known as "Chomon Yabakei," likened to the famous Yabakei Gorge in Oita Prefecture. However, Hagi-born Japanese painter and geologist Hokkai Takashima praised it as "Japan’s most beautiful gorge" and gave it the name "Chomonkyo Gorge." In 1923, it was officially designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
The gorge offers breathtaking views year-round, from cherry blossoms in spring and lush greenery in summer to fiery autumn leaves and snowy winter landscapes. The vibrant fall foliage, reflecting on the river, is especially stunning and well worth the visit. Each November, the Chomonkyo Gorge Autumn Leaves Festival is held.
A 5.1-kilometer walking trail runs along the Abu River, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll through nature. The sound of the flowing river, paired with ever-changing sights such as unusual rock formations, rapids, waterfalls, and deep pools, creates a soothing and restorative experience.
The river is home to various fish, and the surrounding area is inhabited by birds and butterflies. Let yourself be embraced by the richness of nature and enjoy a peaceful escape.
