Izasa Main Store
Renowned for its kakinoha sushi and Izasa sushi, crafted with specially selected sushi rice.
Located in Kamikitayama Village in Yoshino District—nearly at the heart of the Kii Peninsula—Izasa Main Store specializes in takeout sushi. The shop’s origins trace back to 1921 when it first opened as a rice store. The founder’s wife became well-known for her homemade sushi, which led to the commercialization of kakinoha sushi—a traditional dish beloved in the Yoshino area.
The store’s signature kakinoha sushi features specially blended rice made from carefully selected Japanese-grown varieties. Classic toppings include mackerel and salmon, along with sea bream, horse mackerel, and shrimp. The harmonious blend of vinegared rice, salt-cured fish, and the subtle fragrance of persimmon leaves makes this sushi truly exceptional. It’s best enjoyed as-is, without any added soy sauce or condiments.
Another specialty is Izasa sushi, created by Nakatanihonpo—the company behind Izasa—in the 1950s. Wrapped in bamboo leaves, the sushi features a charming hint of red salmon peeking out, reminiscent of traditional Japanese dolls, and has earned a reputation for its adorable presentation.
The menu also includes a wide variety of other options: thickly cut mackerel and conger eel pressed sushi, sakura sushi inspired by Yoshino’s famous cherry blossoms, and hearty mountain vegetable rolls packed with the bounty of the mountains.
