  Popular Niboshi Ramen by Nagi, a Wooden Tenement in Shinjuku Golden Gai

  If you walk a little down the alley behind the light-box of Shinjuku Golden Gai, you will find Nagi, the famous niboshi ramen restaurant. Its white lantern and sign hanging beside its entry are really eye-catching. The owner of Nagi has extensive experience of ramen as he used to be a manager of certain well-known ramen restaurant. After going through much practice and many trials, he chose to open his own restaurant in Shinjuku Golden Gai.

  “Jiro style” of Gotanda’s “Ramen Dai”! Have You Seen This Kind of Ramen?!

  I’ve come to “Ramen Dai,” a restaurant around 3 minutes on foot from Gotanda Station. “Ramen Dai” serves ramen derived from the Jiro Horikiri style. Horikiri style is one of the variations of the original Jiro style. Ramen Dai has focused its locations in Tokyo, but it also has locations in areas like Kyoto and Fukuoka.

  KIRAKU: One of Shibuya’s favourite long-standing ramen shops!

  Shibuya is known as being one of the most trendy, fashion-forward places on earth. Busy intersections and unique youth culture are a couple other images that come to mind. However, contrary to popular belief, there are in fact traces of old Japan hidden amongst the bright lights and shopping malls of Shibuya. KIRAKU is one of such places. This ramen shop has been in business for over 60 years—since 1952 to be exact! With patrons of various ages, from youth to the elderly, there’s no end in sight for KIRAKU’s popularity.

  A 5-Hour Wait at "Tomita" in Chiba Prefecture's Matsuko?! The #1 Tsukemen in Japan That's Worth the Wait!

  Do you know about the shop said to be Japan's best ramen restaurant? That would be "Chuka Soba Tomita," in Chiba Prefecture's Matsuko City. It is a famous shop among famous shops; Tomita has won the grand prize in TRY (Tokyo Ramen of the Year) for 4 consecutive years, has earned many victories at tournaments such as Dai Tsukemen Haku for being top-quality tsukemen, and has had its praises sung by many famous ramen critics. This time, I visited that very "Tomita"!

  Omori’s Hot-Topic Ramen Shop, “Muginae”!

  This time, I am visiting “Homemade Ramen Muginae,” a ramen shop in Omori, Tokyo. This restaurant first opened in April of 2016, and in less than a year it has grown rapidly, becoming an extremely popular restaurant! There is always an orderly line out the front of the shop, and they serve around 100 bowls of ramen every day until they run out.

  Tokyo’s “Menya Kissou” has Ramen That’s Worth the Wait in Line!

  Out of all the ramen shops in Tokyo’s Koto-ku, one is truly representative of Tokyo’s ramen: “Menya Kissou.” Menya Kissou opened in 2006, armed with carefully crafted house-made noodles and a tonkotsu-seafood soup base that uses absolutely no artificial flavorings. Immediately after opening it garnered significant popularity, and that has carried over all the way to the present day, over 10 years since its opening.

  Have you heard about Kinshicho, Tokyo’s hottest new ramen shop yet? It’s called Mengyo!

  This shop offers customers something a little different: ramen made with madai, or Japanese red sea bream, from Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture. Mengyo’s ramen is so popular you'll have to wait in a long line to try it no matter the day, and even then it sells out by evening most of the time.

  Try amazing seafood tonkotsu ramen at Higashi-Jujo, Tokyo's Sansanto!

  Allow me to introduce you to the shop that is said to have the best seafood tonkotsu ramen around: Sansanto. It’s only open at night for 2.5 hours between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.! But this doesn’t put a damper on Sansanto’s popularity; people form lines outside in pursuit of a bowl of their famously delicious ramen every night they’re open! I headed over to see what all the fuss was about!

  The popular New York Hamburger Restaurant, SHAKE SHACK!

  Last year, the hamburger restaurant “SHAKE SHACK” opened its first Japan location at Gaien Park. With a three-hour wait on its opening day, SHAKE SHACK was a hit from the get-go! SHAKE SHACK is definitely a hot-topic hamburger restaurant: its second location opened in April of this year in Ebisu, and the third location opened in Yurakucho’s Tokyo International Forum this fall. This time, I visited the popular SHAKE SHACK’s second location in Ebisu.

  Have you ever heard of Kitaotsuka Ramen’s chashu ramen? The dish is apparently covered entirely with melt-in-your-mouth chashu, or braised pork belly. I headed to Kitaotsuka in Tokyo’s Toshima ward to try it for myself!
