Last update :

Tono Monogatari is a collection of folktales, faiths and annual events around Tono Region which Kunio Yanagita heard from Kizen Sasaki and abridged. Published in 1910, this book of 119 stories covers monsters such as Kappa and Oshirasama, scary stories, sacred rituals and more. Tono Folktale Museum helps visitors experience the world in the Tale of Tono.

There are three highlights here. The first is Mukasi-banashi Gura (Folktale Storehouse) shares anecdotes passed on in Tono Region with video and audio archives. Zashiki-Warashi or Snow Woman stories are depicted in video illustrations, or cut-paper pictures.

The second is Takazen Ryokan, the inn which Yanagita stayed whenever he visited Tono, and Yanagita Kunio Exhibition Hall, his home during retirement which was transferred to Tono and is used to share his life and accomplishments.

The last is Tonoza, a theater where a story teller performs in Tono dialect. One story lasts for about 20 minutes and changes each day.
