An Onsen resort with a long history that opened about 340 years ago. It is said that the name "Shika-no-yu" came from an anecdote about an injured deer that healed its wounds in the hot spring, and the name was changed to "Sukayu Onsen" in an accent. Despite its location deep in the mountains, it has been widely known as a therapeutic hot spring since the Edo period (1603-1868) and was registered as The first National Health Onsen Resort in 1954. As the name suggests, the spring is an acidic sulfur spring that effectively treats sensitivity to cold and neuralgia.

The famous bathhouse at Sokayu Onsen is the "Hiba Senninburo Buth," a large bathhouse made entirely of Hiba (cypress). The bathhouse, made of Aomori Hiba (cypress), is 160 tatami (about 292suqure meters) and consists of five bathtubs, including a hot bath and a cold bath quarter bath, and a hot waterfall. This bathhouse is a place where the mixed bathing culture of men and women, which has become rare today, is still preserved.
However, it is not an entirely mixed bath and separated men's and women's areas. Bathing suits are available for purchase, and one hour from 8:00 a.m. and from 8:00 p.m. every day are reserved for women only, so women uncomfortable with mixed bathing can also feel at ease. There is also a separate male and female Tama-no-Yu bath.

Highlights

  • The warmth of the hiba (Japanese cypress) baths can be felt in the large baths.
  • Enjoy yourself while observing mixed bathing etiquette.
  • The Ryokan and Touji buildings are attached to each other, making it the perfect place for a hot-spring cure.
  • The day-trip bathing hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (registration closes 30 minutes prior to the day of your visit).
  • The road is restricted during the winter depending on the road conditions.
