Aomori Museum of Art

This art museum is 5-minute on foot from Sannai Maruyama Historical Site, the world cultural heritage site. The highlight of this museum is ALECO for the ballet, painted by one of the prominent artists in the 20th century, Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985).

The ballet ALECO is based on Pushkin’s narrative poem The Gypsies. Of the four background paintings, three of them are displayed in the museum’s big hall. Each is a 9m-tall and 15m-wide grand work, reflecting Chagall’s passion. Another one is rented for a long term (until March 2027) from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Besides Chagall, other works of international artists and Aomori’s artists, such as Shiko Munakata and Yoshitomo Nara, are displayed. Nara’s work, Aomori Dog, was especially popular. It is a 8.5m-tall 3D work, and the serene look appealed to many tourists and its souvenirs were sold out once.
