Yonezawa is a castle town in Yonezawa Domain which was governed by the feudal warlord Uesugi Kenshin and his family. Many heroes came out from here such as Uesugi Yozan, Edo Period’s great governor. In Yonezawa, spots related to the Uesugi Clan dot around the Yonezawa Castle remain, such as the Uesugi Family’s mausoleum.
Located on the outer edge of Yonezawa Castle Remains, Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum displays the information of the Uesugi Clan. Its highlight is “Uesugi Original Rakuchu Rakugai Zubyobu” decorative folding screen, which is said to have been gifted from Oda Nobunaga to Uesugi Kenshin in 1574. (The original is shown for a limited time. A replica is on display at other times). The painting depicts life in Kyoto in four seasons and is the work of Kano Eitoku. It was designated as a national treasure in 1995.
Other displays include Uesugi Yozan’s books such as Uesugi Clan Archives which became the first national treasure among samurai clan’s documents.
