A large canyon deeply carved into a V-shape by the erosion of the Kurobe River. The water originating from Mt. Washu in the central part of the Northern Alps flows down a steep slope with a height difference of 3,000 meters over a length of 86 km between the Tateyama Mountain Range and the Ushirotateyamarenpo.
The only way to access such a rugged valley is by trolley train. It takes about one hour and 20 minutes from Unazuki Station to reach Keyakidaira Station, about 20 km away, via eight stops on the trolley train. Along the route, there are many scenic spots such as Sarutobi Gorge, a Special Places of Scenic Beauty and Special Natural Monuments, Okukane Bridge, which rises 34 meters above the surface of the Kurobe River, and the imposing Hitokui Iwa that seems to swallow people up, as well as open-air hot spring baths and footbaths. You can walk along the promenade along the canyon while enjoying the seasonal scenery.
There are two types of trolley cars. Open (no windows) regular coaches with a sense of openness, and relaxing coaches with a spacious seat, which can be selected according to the season, purpose, and number of passengers. There are also restaurants at Unazuki Station, where the trolley departs, and at Keyakidaira Station, where it arrives, and various boxed lunches are available for purchase.
