Yamanaka Onsen
A lovely town of hot springs with 1300-year history, beloved by Matsuo Basho.
This hot spring resort spreads along Kakusenkei Gorges known for its scenic beauty. There is a 1.3km trail along the Gorges with the cedar Korogi Bridge and Ayatori Bridge in S-shape. Basyo no Yakata Museum and Basho-do Hut are related to the poet Matsuo Basho, who stopped here during his trip mentioned in his journal, Okuno Hosomichi, and made poems praising the hot spring and the sceneries. Yuge Kaido Street that runs through the center of the resort is lined with galleries and shops of Yamanaka lacquerware and Kutani ware as well as cafes.
The resort is dotted with nearly 17 classic hot spring inns and modern hotels. Each has something to offer such as delicious dinner, the latest spa facility or big private space. Choose for your liking and needs from a variety of hotels and traditional inns.
Yamanaka Onsen is in the area where traditional crafts and cultures, such as Kutani ware and Yamanaka lacquerware, are still alive. You can try making Japanese lacquer, painting wares, or using a pottery wheel in many facilities.
