Awara Onsen
Quaint hot spring resort, fun to meander and soak in different hot springs.
Since its discovery in 1883, Awara Onsen has developed as a resort. Called as a “Rear Room in the Kansai Region,” many writers loved and visited here. There are 74 springs and each facility has its own source spring, allowing you to try different water quality and effects. April brings a spring festival, August has Awara Yukake Festival, and in Awara Togenkyo in winter, bamboo lanterns light up the whole resort.
Roughly 20 inns dot the resort, surrounded by fields. Some have garden outdoor hot springs, guest rooms with an outdoor hot spring or offer dishes made of local ingredients. You can choose one according to your needs and wants, whether a reasonable one with a soothing hot spring or a high-class inn.
In front of Echizen Railway’s Awara Yunomachi Station, there is Ashiyu, a free foot bath fed by two source springs. Seafood, grilled chicken, and ramen restaurants are lined up in traditional joints on Yukemuri Yokocho, creating a nostalgic space.
