Haiya
A historic, 137-year old ryokan with a soothing onsen sourced from its own private spring and tasty delights made with local ingredients.
Haiya is a veteran ryokan, long-loved since its opening in 1884. Step into the breathtaking build of the jinya-style lodge and find yourself lost in a Japanese-modern decorated lobby where every ceiling and pillar is beautifully decorated. Just passed the lobby you’ll even find an authentic Japanese garden, manicured to bloom gorgeously across all four seasons.
The look and feel changes depending on which room you book, from authentic Japanese rooms with the same old-world charm of their first opening, or Japanese-styled western rooms that fit the savvy modern customer. There are even private detached rooms with exclusive gardens and open air baths, bringing the total room count to 50 on site. No matter which you pick you’ll find a kettle, refrigerator and TV awaiting you inside.
The natural spring waters, sourced from an in-house private spring, feature sodium chloride spring waters that are great for soothing nerves, muscle aches and beautifying the skin. At the shared baths you’ll find a stone garden at the open-air bath, tourmaline sand baths and a lying-style hot spring to try. There’s also a sauna, and private open-air bath available for rent (fee applies).
The cuisine served here, featuring Fukui/Arawa area delights comes especially recommended. At the kaiseki feast here you’ll find seasonal vegetables, mountain vegetables and fresh seafood to fit each of the four seasons. As an extra special treat you can even try Wakasa beef, fresh abalone and season-limited items like Echizen crab, Seiko Crab, rock oysters, and other high-end delights. There’s even a menu of local sake to pair, all selected carefully by the onsite sake sommelier, a young woman who’s been publicly certified for her selections.
The “Kanzukitei”, newly redone Japanese-style garden suite room opened again in February 2022.
