One of the things famous in the Aizu Region is Akabeko, the traditional papier mache toy in the shape of a red cow. Originally, it was made as an amulet for children. The simple face, the humorous nodding when you touch the head - it has a cute appeal. As the symbol of a local community, it is used widely to this day.

JR Ban-etsusai Line, JR Tadami Line and Aizu Railway all converge at Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, a center in Aizu Region. Its building looks like a castle and is selected as one of the Top 100 stations of the Tohoku District. At the east entrance of the station, a big Akabeko greets everyone who visits Aizu, which is a popular photo spot. When you push the nearby red button, it shakes the head and begins talking, “Hello, I’m Akabeh!” then sings “Akabeko dance song.”

Aizuwakamatsu City is dotted with various Akabeko statues. You can hunt for cute Akabeko as you stroll around the city.
