To-no-Hetsuri
A line of steep cliffs, designated as a national natural monument.
Formed over a million years through repeated erosion and weathering, this scenic area features a series of remarkable rock formations. "Hetsuri" is a local term meaning "cliff" or "dangerous wall”. Stretching over 200 meters, this grand landscape of massive columnar cliffs is a unique example of riverine erosion, first designated as a national natural monument in 1943.
The massive cliffs are named according to their shapes, such as "Eboshi Rock”, "Kurinto Rock”, "Byobu Rock”, "Shishito Rock”, and "Gomato Rock”. Imagining the origins of these names based on the distinctive shapes of the cliffs adds an element of fun. Crossing the suspension bridge over the Aga River, which leads to the Hetsuri cliffs, brings you face to face with the breathtaking natural formations. The surrounding area is blanketed in trees, making it even more a sight with the fresh green of spring and the vivid colors of autumn. The winter landscape, covered in pure white snow, is also exceptionally stunning, though the bridge is closed during this season.
Located just a five-minute walk from the nearest train station, To-no-Hetsuri is also home to several dining and souvenir shops that buzz with visitors during spring and fall.
