Explore a collection of approximately 1,200 valuable artifacts accumulated since the founding of Tohoku University.
The Tohoku University Museum houses a diverse collection of invaluable academic specimens and groundbreaking inventions accumulated since the university’s founding—true "treasures of the university." It was established to centrally manage and share these assets with the local community.
The museum's permanent exhibits feature approximately 1,200 specimens, including fossils, rocks, minerals, and ore samples. Visitors can explore exhibits such as the Evolution of Life on Earth section, which showcases fossils from the Precambrian era to the Neogene and Quaternary periods in chronological order, as well as the Rocks and Minerals that Make Up the Earth section, which displays the geological components of our planet.
In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum hosts special exhibitions that highlight Tohoku University's latest research and showcase aspects of Sendai’s history. Collaborative exhibitions with other institutions provide opportunities to explore a broader range of academic specimens and materials.
The museum also offers online special exhibitions, educational displays, and YouTube videos explaining the geology of the Sendai area. Additionally, it actively shares updates and insights through X (formerly Twitter).
