Yagiyama Zoological Park Fujisaki no Mori
One of the largest zoos in the Tohoku region, where visitors can get up close and personal with some of the most ferocious animals.
“Yagiyama Zoological Park Fujisaki no Mori" is one of the largest zoos in Tohoku, housing approximately 600 animals of 115 species, including endangered species. Located in the neighborhood of Aobayama, where the ruins of Sendai Castle are located, the zoo is loved by locals and tourists alike for its easy accessibility (12 minutes by subway from Sendai Station, right off the Yagiyama Zoological Park Station) and for its diverse species of mammals, birds, and reptiles that can be observed.
Of these, the "Africa Park", where you can see African elephants, giraffes, and zebras at a glance, and the "Ravenous Animal House", where you can observe rare Sumatran tigers and polar bears up close and personal, are must-sees. Both of these exhibits are appealing because they bring out the true ecology of the animals. The red panda, with its adorable appearance, is very popular, and the monkey mountain, with its large number of Japanese macaques acting as they please, is a delightful sight to see. In addition, the "Fureai-kan (Petting Hall)" where visitors can interact with goats and other animals and give them treats is also recommended.
After observing the animals, head to "Good Gout Terrace", which offers a variety of visually pleasing menu items such as the "Shirokuma Plate" with cute footprint toppings. This café-restaurant is also a great place for adults to enjoy pizza with beer. On the way home, you can look for souvenirs at the Zebra Shop.
