Sung about in the "Manyoshu" and also mentioned in Kōtarō Takamura's "Chieko-sho", the mountain attracts numerous climbers due to its easily accessible natural beauty. It's also recognized as one of Japan's "100 Famous Mountains."
Known as one of the "100 Flower Mountains", Mount Adatara (Adatarayama) is a treasure trove of alpine plants and wildflowers. Especially in the peak month of June, various flowers bloom according to the season, delighting visitors. The rough mountain terrain, reminiscent of Martian landscapes around the Numano-hira crater formed by a major eruption in the Meiji era, is also a sight to behold.
Although its altitude is 1,700 meters, by using the "Adatara Mountain Ropeway," one can ascend from the base station to near the summit station at approximately 1,350 meters in just about 10 minutes. This makes it easy to enjoy trekking up to the summit in about an hour and a half, making it popular among beginners and families. It's also renowned for its autumn foliage, drawing crowds from late September to mid-October each year. In winter, ski resorts open, offering some of the best snow quality in the Tohoku region.
