Kurobe Gorge Selene Museum of Art

Located in the Unazuki Onsen resort area, the gateway to Kurobe Gorge, the Kurobe Gorge Selene Museum of Art is dedicated to "preserving and sharing the natural beauty of Kurobe Gorge through art for future generations." The museum features works by seven renowned contemporary Japanese artists, all depicting scenes from Kurobe Gorge specifically created for this museum.

The participating artists are Ikuo Hirayama, Hideo Shiode, Sawato Fukui, Toshio Tabuchi, Koichi Takeuchi, Yuji Tezuka, and Masaaki Miyasako. Each artist explored various parts of Kurobe Gorge alongside mountain guides and museum staff to create their pieces. The natural landscapes of Kurobe Gorge, as seen through the artists' eyes, offer a unique beauty and charm distinct from seeing the gorge firsthand. In addition to these works, the museum permanently displays the large-scale painting Kurobe River by Yoshinobu Toide, a Western-style artist originally from Unazuki who now resides in France.

The museum is part of the Kurobe City Art Creation Center Selene, which also houses a café offering delicious coffee and tea made with Kurobe’s famous spring water.
