Last update :

A waterfall located where water flows from Lake Towada and merges with the Oirase Gorge stream. Standing approximately 7 meters tall and 20 meters wide, it is the largest waterfall in the Oirase Gorge and the only one along the main stream. The name "Choshi Otaki" derives from its resemblance to the spout of a traditional sake bottle, with Lake Towada representing the bottle itself.

Due to the waterfall's powerful flow, fish are unable to ascend to Lake Towada, earning it the nickname "Fish-Blocking Waterfall." While fish like the kokanee salmon can now be seen in the lake due to stocking efforts, Lake Towada was historically devoid of fish.

The waterfall's beauty transforms with the seasons. The peak water volume occurs around June when snowmelt feeds the flow, creating a dramatic scene. Autumn paints the surroundings in brilliant reds and golds, while winter reveals a mesmerizing "Icefall Blue" as sunlight reflects off the frozen water.
