With the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in March 2024, Fukui Station is drawing increased attention. The "Dinosaur Plaza" at the west exit is a fitting gateway to Fukui Prefecture, known as the "Dinosaur Kingdom" due to the numerous fossils discovered here. The plaza boasts a variety of dinosaur-themed attractions.
The highlight is the life-sized dinosaur robots. In addition to Fukuiraptor and Fukuititan, whose fossils were discovered in Fukui, a T. rex will be added in 2024. These robots move and roar, creating an impressive spectacle. The station building’s wall features a gigantic mural, about 45 meters wide and 10 meters high, depicting 10 types of dinosaurs that lived in Fukui during the Early Cretaceous period. At night, both the dinosaur robots and the mural are illuminated, offering a different atmosphere from the daytime. The trick art, which makes it look like dinosaurs are jumping out of the wall, is a recommended photo spot.
Additionally, don’t miss the dinosaur attractions at the east exit of Fukui Station, including moving Triceratops that you can touch and interactive dinosaur monuments, as well as a striking mural depicting the world of pterosaurs, which make for great photo opportunities.
