Shinzan Shrine
Famed for hosting Namahage Sedo Festival, Shinzan Shrine sits perched on the slopes of Mount Shinzan, a once sacred site for Shugendo practices.
Found along the slopes of Mount Shinzan in northern Oga, Shinzan Shrine stands as a testament to the region’s prosperity as a sacred site for mountain worship. The shrine sits surrounded by the full majesty of Akita cedar trees, exudes a solemn atmosphere and is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Keikō (71–130 AD). From the Heian period onward, it thrived as a Shugendo spiritual hub under the patronage of the ruling class.
The shrine's main sanctuary is located at the 567-meter summit of Mount Shinzan and is revered as a guardian deity for national stability, victory in battle, abundant harvests, and maritime safety. Rebuilt in 2007, the two-story structure of the main sanctuary offers stunning views from its upper level. Be sure to note that it takes about 1.5 hours to hike from the worship hall to the main sanctuary, calling for comfortable walking clothes before making the trip.
Shinzan Shrine boasts a close link to the Namahage traditions, hosting the famed annual Namahage Sedo Festival on the second Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of February. During the festival, dynamic and powerful Namahage dances are performed under the glow of bonfires in the shrine’s grounds, creating a spectacular and unforgettable experience.
