Akiu Great Falls

Tucked away in the upper reaches of the Natori River, which flows through Sendai and Natori in Miyagi Prefecture and into the Pacific Ocean, Akiu Great Falls boasts an impressive width of 6 meters and a drop of 55 meters. The falls sit among the ranks of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, with full designation as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

Once at the falls you’ll find a breathtaking drop with thunderous roar. Flanked by an ever-changing backdrop of seasonal beauty, expect vibrant hues in autumn or delicate cherry blossoms in spring, the lush greenery of summer, and the serene snowy landscapes of winter. For an extra special look, make your way up to the Takimidai observation deck, just an easy 5-10 minute walk from the large parking lot, for an impeccable view of the falls you won’t soon forget. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even stroll down to the basin of the falls for a jaw-dropping angle of the falls from down below.

Nearby attractions include the Akiu Otaki Fudoson, a temple with a large ginkgo tree, and the Sendai City Akiu Great Falls Botanical Garden, home to about 200 species of plants, making the area a popular destination for many visitors, especially on weekends.
