Unshoji is a Soto Zen temple located on the Oga Peninsula, the westernmost point of Akita Prefecture. It is said to have been founded in 1624, and its main hall, a historic building, was constructed during the Edo period. The temple's principal image is a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, reportedly crafted by a sculptor from Osaka.
One of the temple's main attractions is the stunning display of hydrangeas that cover the grounds. This began with a single hydrangea planted by the Vice Chief Priest, Shuun Konaka, and over the course of 15 years, the hydrangeas have multiplied to more than 2,000 bushes. When in full bloom, the temple grounds are awash in a sea of blue, creating an otherworldly scene that leaves visitors in awe.
Beyond the blooming hydrangeas, the view opens up to the port town of Kitaura and the Oga Sea, offering a landscape that can only be seen here. This unique scenery has earned Unshoji a reputation as one of the top hydrangea spots in Japan.
The hydrangeas typically reach full bloom in late June, with the best viewing season from early June to mid-July. Whether in the daytime or under the evening light, the hydrangeas offer a breathtaking sight.
