As an urban park in Niigata City, Fukushimagata serves as a beloved natural retreat for the local community, offering a place to experience the rich biodiversity of the wetland. The area is home to nationally designated Natural Monuments, including the Greater White-fronted Goose (Ōhishikui) and Tundra Swan (Kohakuchō), as well as the rare Giant Water Lily (Onibasu). To date, over 220 species of birds and 450 species of plants have been recorded, making it a true sanctuary for wildlife.
Within the park, The Water Station View Fukushimagata serves as an educational and cultural hub, showcasing the history and ecological significance of Fukushimagata. The museum shop on the first floor and the open-air terrace on the third floor are available to access for free.
The paid exhibit areas from the fourth floor and above provide in-depth information about the wetland’s wildlife, history, and conservation efforts, including displays on Greater White-fronted Geese and Giant Water Lilies. A video exhibition room allows visitors to observe the wetland in real time via live camera feeds.
The seventh-floor rooftop observatory offers a panoramic view of Fukushimagata and the Echigo Plain, providing a stunning perspective of the region’s natural beauty.
