Hachibodai
A scenic viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan and volcanic lakes.
Hachibodai is a scenic viewpoint located on the northern highlands of the Oga Peninsula, which juts out into the Sea of Japan in northwestern Akita Prefecture. The name "Hachibodai" was given by Prince Takamatsu, the younger brother of Emperor Showa, during his visit to the Oga Peninsula in 1952.
At Hachibodai, a large observation deck offers a sweeping panoramic view. To the west, visitors can admire Toga Bay, a port that thrived during the Edo period as a waiting harbor for favorable winds. To the east, the volcanic lakes Ichinomegata and Ninomegata, formed within a phreatomagmatic crater, along with Mount Kampu, create a striking landscape. On clear days, the view extends as far as the Ou Mountains and the Aomori Prefecture border. Hachibodai is also renowned as a sunset viewpoint, where the breathtaking scene of the sun sinking into the Sea of Japan captivates all who visit.
Nearby attractions include the Namahage Museum and Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum, which provide an in-depth look at the Namahage tradition, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Additionally, Shinzan Shrine, the site of the Namahage Sedo Festival, is also worth a visit.
