Water Park Fukushimagata

A lush waterside paradise drawing bird lovers, insect enthusiasts, and flower admirers alike.

Last update :

Located in Niigata City, Fukushimagata is the largest lake in the city and the first wetland in Japan to receive Ramsar Convention municipal certification. A true natural sanctuary, the area is home to over 220 species of birds, 800 species of plants, and more than 900 species of insects. The surrounding park is well-maintained, offering visitors a variety of ways to enjoy the rich wetland environment.

At the heart of the park is The Water Station View Fukushimagata, an informational hub detailing the area’s biodiversity and cultural significance. Visit here to learn about the Greater White-fronted Goose and Tundra Swan, both migratory birds that visit Fukushimagata, as well as the Giant Water Lily (Onibasu), which has the largest leaves of any aquatic plant in Japan. The facility also features live camera feeds of the wetland and a rooftop observatory offering panoramic views of Fukushimagata and the Echigo Plain.

Beyond View Fukushimagata, the park features Nature Learning Gardens, a spot offering the chance to observe local wildlife up close. On-site you’ll also find Lagoon Brewery, a sake brewery and café producing craft sake using local fruits and herbs, including strawberries. Dig in a little deeper with a stop over at Kataraitei, a traditional-style rest house serving up “Kata Cuisine"—a meal inspired by the wetland’s natural bounty and local wisdom (reservation required).
For those who want to connect more deeply with nature, the park offers a campsite and a self-service accommodation lodge called Ryofuso, perfect for overnight stays, BBQs, bonfires, and birdwatching. Visitors can also experience seasonal beauty, such as one million rapeseed flowers blooming from mid-April to mid-May, transforming the park into a sea of yellow. In late September, the Fukushimagata Nature and Culture Festival takes place, featuring Kangeibi, a spectacular light installation using thousands of LED lights to depict migratory birds in flight.

Nearby, visitors can also explore Niigata Senbei Oukoku, where they can learn about the history and production of Niigata’s famous rice crackers and even try making their own. It’s the perfect additional stop for those exploring the area.
