Q
Is "Kappa Ebisen" fried in oil?
"Kappa Ebisen" is not fried in oil, but toasted. By toasting it to a fragrant finish, it has a crispy texture unique to "Kappa Ebisen".
However, it does not go down the throat well as it is, so in the flavoring process, an appropriate amount of oil is sprayed on it to give it a smooth texture and throat feel. Although it is not fried in oil, oil is used.
Q
What is the origin of the name "Kappa Ebisen"?
Kappa is a legendary creature that has been familiar to the Japanese since ancient times.
In the Showa 20s (1945-1954), a comic called "Kappa Heaven" by the late Kon Shimizu became popular.
At that time, Calbee, which was making arare (Japanese rice crackers) from wheat flour and selling them, asked Mr. Shimizu to draw a kappa character on the product package, and it was well received by customers as the "Kappa Arare" series.
Since its launch in 1964, the package has featured shrimp as the main character, so there was no picture of a kappa, but the name has remained, and now when you say "Kappa Ebisen", people think of Calbee's snacks!
