Komachi Street
Kamakura’s best tourist street with souvenir shops and restaurants.
After exiting the East Exit of Kamakura Station, there is a 360-meter road heading north with a red torii gate at the entrance. Along the road are about 250 stores, including restaurants and souvenir shops for tourists, as well as stores that serve the daily needs of local residents. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kamakura and is crowded in all seasons. Thanks to the completion of power line undergrounding in 2013, the street has a narrow but clean appearance.
The main approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is Wakamiya-oji, a wide road lined with raised cherry blossom trees. One of the approaches running along its west side is Komachi Street. It is a base for sightseeing in Kamakura, with many historical and cultural attractions surrounded by the sea and mountains, and is a very popular spot with a large number of returning visitors due to the various ways to enjoy each of the four seasons.
It has recently gained popularity as a haven for gourmet eateries and sweets. Many shops sell items that are only available on Komachi Street. It is, however, prohibited to eat or drink while walking. Please be courteous and follow rules such as not causing trouble and not littering. The alleyways on both sides are dotted with hidden gems that serve locally grown baby sardines, Kamakura vegetables and some other specialties.
