In Akita’s prominent hot spring, Nyuto Onsenkyo, Tsurunoyu is especially popular. Located deep in a far-away mountain, it looks like samurai’s hiding place, which is for a reason - it belonged to Akita Domain’s lord. The 2nd lord, Satake Yoshitaka, used to soak in this therapeutic bath and the current thatched-roof guesthouse was for his guards to stay.
Four different water qualities, Shirayu (white water), Kuroyu (black), Naka (middle)-noyu and Taki (waterfall)-noyu are offered in eight bathrooms. The main outdoor hot spring, with the best view in the Nyuto Onsenkyo, is for both men and women. It takes courage for women to get in there, but the water is opaque and once in the water, it is not so intimidating. Women can enter there from the women-only outdoor bath, while staying in the water the whole time.
Thatched-roof guest house is a wonderful place to stay with the traditional Irori hearth. You can put on the local specialty, Yamanoimo(Japanese yam)nabe hot pot or stream fish on skewers, and enjoy the traditional Japanese life-style. Forget the busy days and relax in the therapeutic hot spring.
*Cleaning takes place on Mondays and only bathing visits are allowed but outdoor hot springs are closed. Guests who are staying in the inn can start using outdoor hot springs at 3pm.
