The Gotoh Museum
Be inspired by the priceless collection, including national treasures, at the Gotoh Museum.
The Gotoh Museum was established in 1960 by Keita Gotoh (1882-1959), the founder of the Tokyu Group. This private museum showcases the valuable art collection that Gotoh amassed over his lifetime, including ancient sutras and other precious artifacts. The museum houses approximately 5,000 pieces, including five national treasures and 50 important cultural properties. These are displayed in six to seven annual exhibitions and one to two special exhibitions each year.
The exhibits change with each exhibition, with particularly high popularity for the Spring Masterpieces Exhibition featuring the national treasure "Tale of Genji Picture Scroll" and the Autumn Masterpieces Exhibition showcasing the national treasure "Murasaki Shikibu Diary Picture Scroll." These exhibitions attract numerous art enthusiasts during their run.
The architectural beauty incorporating the Shinden-zukuri style, a traditional aristocratic architectural style, is also a highlight. The museum’s expansive 6,000-tsubo (approximately 20,000 square meters) grounds include a beautiful garden with seasonal flowers such as weeping cherry blossoms and azaleas, making for a delightful stroll.
