A renowned mountain in Tochigi, with smoke still rising from its active crater.
Located at the northernmost tip of Tochigi Prefecture, Nasu-dake, also known as Mt. Chausu, is the highest peak in the Nasu Mountain Range. It is one of the most famous active volcanoes in the Kanto region, with white smoke continuously rising from its crater. The main fumarole is located on the western slope, where the sound of roaring steam fills the area.
From the summit, at an elevation of 1,915 meters, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view, including the dramatic sight of the rising smoke. The mountain offers stunning seasonal changes, with azaleas blooming in spring and vibrant autumn foliage.
A ropeway provides easy access up to the 9th station, making the summit reachable without much effort. From the ropeway’s top station, it takes about 50 minutes on foot to reach the peak, making it accessible even without specialized gear. However, comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket, even in summer, are recommended. Various hiking trails are available to suit different levels of fitness, making Nasu-dake a popular destination for both beginners and seasoned hikers.
